With a population exceeding 20% of the entire world, China has a lot of people to keep happy and a massive market to satisfy.

Westernization has made a huge impact on the culture of China, and has influenced the stores and brands that are available in the country today. Many major stores and brands have their manufacturing done in China to minimize production costs, so the amount of products available to the Chinese market is overwhelmingly immense.

Despite so many Western stores and brands being dominant in the Chinese market today, there are still a large amount of stores that are owned and run by the Chinese.

Supermarkets are fast becoming big business in China, and there are several large international chains based here, such as Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Metro. There are also plenty of convenience stores on most corners in metropolitan regions of China.

In recent decades the Chinese - particularly the younger generation - have increasingly started dressing in similar clothes to Westerners. Another popular chain store for men’s and women’s suits and business apparel is Judger. It is one of the largest garment manufacturers in China, and has over 180 stores across China.

It is one of the best known and respected clothing retailers for both men and women in the Asia Pacific region. As well as their high quality clothes, they are also renowned for their affordable prices. Giordano has 644 stores in mainland China alone.

The electrical appliance retailer Gome recently ranked first in the top 100 chain stores in China by sales volume. With over 820 stores around China, it is not hard to find one near you. They stock a huge range of consumer electronics including mobile phones, televisions, cameras, and household appliances.

Also ranked in the top 100 is McDonald’s. Although not originally from China, it would be wrong to write an article on the brands in China without mentioning the popular fast-food chain. McDonald’s has changed the way the world gets their food, and China is no exception. There are chains of McDonald’s restaurants in numerous locations in almost every city in China.

It is not only McDonald’s that is servicing the nations desire for fast food. Huge Chinese company Yum! are the world’s market leader in fast food restaurants - opening four new stores outside the USA every single day. In mainland China alone they opened up 500 new restaurants in 2008. They are responsible for well-known brands including: KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Long John Silver’s. Pizza Hut is China’s number one casual dining brand and there are over 400 Pizza Hut restaurants in nearly 100 cities across the country, as well as 79 Pizza Hut home delivery service centers.

For those that are looking at purchasing a mobile phone, the leading retailer in China is D.Phone. Since being founded in 1993, D.Phone has gained a reputation for excellence and quality across China. There are stores in 25 provinces, covering 60 cities with over 800 stores. They stock most major international mobile phone brands including: Nokia, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson; as well as domestic brands such as Bird, Eastcom and Amoisonic.

Another popular electonics retail store in China is Hisap. Hisap has stores in over 30 cities in the Shanghai region, Jiangsu province, Zhejiang province, and Anhui province. There are over 80 retail stores across China. Some of the products that Hisap stock include: desktop computers and accessories, laptops, digital products, communication products, office supplies, software, and other consumer electronics. It stocks items from most major international electronic brand names such as: Intel, HP, Sony, Apple and Lenovo. As well as having their own home brand - Hiteker - the prices of which are generally much lower than the major brands.
